Japan reaches record number of centenarians

Tokyo, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) Japan reached a historical record of 90,526 people who have lived longer than a century, maintaining the upward trend for 52 consecutive years, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) reported.

According to the body, the Basic Registry of Residents counted 10,365 men and 80,161 women until September 1st, for a total increase of 4,016 centenarians compared to 2021.

The prefectures of Shimane (142.41), Kochi (136.84), and Tottori (132.6) while the lowest were in Saitama (43.62), Aichi (44.78) and Chiba (50.98) reported the highest number per 100,000 population.

An additional 45,141 people, including Japanese living abroad and foreigners residing in Japan permanently, will reach the age of 100 this fiscal year, according to the MHLW.

Life expectancy in 2021 in Japan, which has a population of over 125 million, was 87.57 years for females and 81.47 years for males. The indicator fell for the first time in a decade, due in part to the Covid-19 pandemic.
