The president extended to 23 the original 20 “long live”, and added three new proclamations in these ceremonies, “Death to corruption!, Death to racism!, Death to classism!” from the traditional ones that led the “Grito.”
López Obrador, accompanied by his wife Beatriz Gutiérrez and waving the Mexican flag, appeared at 23:00 hours, local time, on Thursday at the presidential balcony of the Palace, and before more than 150,000 people, began the “Grito” with the typical “Mexicans and Mexicans,” followed with the infallible “Long live independence!.”
He immediately read the list of heroes headed by Miguel Hidalgo and followed by Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, Ignacio Allende, Leona Vicario, Jose Maria Morelos, and Vicente Guerrero.
It is noteworthy that López Obrador gave preponderance to two illustrious women, Josefa Ortiz and Leona Vicario, even above other great heroes.
The president closed the “Grito” with three “¡Long live Mexico!” just as priest Miguel Hidalgo did in the bell tower of the Church of Dolores in Guanajuato to call the Mexicans to fight for the independence of New Spain, which would be achieved 11 years later, coincidentally in September, but on September 27.
The traditional military parade, which recalls the entrance of the Trigarante Army in that same square, will travel a long way to Campo de Marte, where hundreds of thousands of people come with their children to enjoy the colorful ceremony.
