“A serious threat to radiological safety comes from the attacks by Ukrainian nationalists on critical facilities at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station with heavy guns supplied by NATO countries and whose targets are designated by the United States,” the official stated.
Patrushev stressed at a security meeting the “serious radiation threat” at the facility, the largest of its kind in Ukraine and Europe.
He also clarified that “the consequences of these provocations could be quite catastrophic not only for most of the Ukrainian and Russian population, but also for Europeans, and they could exceed the tragedies that occurred at the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plants,” he insisted.
The most recent report presented about the issue by the Ministry of Defense on September 11 refers that Kiev forces carried out a total of 26 different attacks on the atomic plant, as well as the nearby town of Energodar, from September 1 to date.
Defense Ministry spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said that the city and nearby areas were left without electricity due to the shelling.
