In his personal Twitter account, the president considered that “universal and extremely Cuban in his work, Cosme Proenza has left us too soon, leaving pain in those of us who knew him and admire his personal style.”
“With great sorrow, I embrace your loved ones. Cuba loses an artist and we lose a friend,” added the president on the social network.
Cultural authorities in the city of Holguín, where Proenza lived and developed a large part of his work, expressed about the artist that he was the owner of a particular pictorial worldview distinguishable in the contemporary artistic field, with a substantial contribution to Cuban plastic arts from the study and reappropriation of the classics of universal art.
He graduated from the National School of Art, in Havana and the Institute of Fine Arts, in Kiev, Ukraine; Proenza reflected his painstaking research on the codes of European art, in series such as Manipulaciones, Boscomanias, The Gods Listen and Variations on Matisse Themes.
As cultural institutions of the territory highlighted “his unique work remains not only in students, colleagues and connoisseurs of art but also in simple people, who learned to admire, respect and feel it, with pride and part of our identity”.
