Camille Occius, a coordinator of that human rights platform, recalled that the lives of journalists must be protected, even in times of war.

“The murder of Tayson Latigue, known as Tijèn Jounalis, and Frantzsen Charles, in Cité Soleil, on September 11, 2022, is an atrocious act. I vehemently condemn this crime that has plunged the Haitian press into mourning,” Occius said.

The reporters were shot and their bodies were burned when they returned from the Brooklyn slum after interviewing the parents of a 17-year-old girl recently murdered by armed gangs, according to local media, and five other reporters could flee when the individuals opened fire.

With the deaths of Latigue and Charles, five journalists have been killed this year by gangs operating in Port-au-Prince, at a time when violence and insecurity increase.

In early January, Wilguens Louissaint and Amady John Wesley were killed by armed gangs operating in the Laboule 12 slum, in southwest Port-au-Prince, while they were reporting on the growing insecurity.

Lazarre Maximilien was apparently shot by the police in late February, while he was covering a demonstration by textile workers demanding higher wages.
