China accuses U.S. of threatening national cybersecurity

Beijing, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) China on Sunday accused the US government of endangering its cybersecurity after an attack launched on the email system of the Xi'an Polytechnic University.

Yang Tao, Director-General of the Foreign Ministry’s North America and Oceania Department, said Washington’s actions threatened both technical secrets of the country’s institutions as well as infrastructure and personal information.

Tao urged the White House to stop these actions by pointing out there are “clear facts and irrefutable evidence” in this regard.

Yao’s statement follows a probe revealing the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) was in charge of a cyberattack on Xi’an Polytechnic University´s e-mail system.

According to local press, the operation popped on June 22 against Xi’an Polytechnic University, which is a famous institution for its aviation and aerospace studies.

Hackers sent emails to professors and students with supposed travel proposals, scientific materials and international thesis projects, on the contrary, these really had Trojans with the purpose of stealing data and personal information.

The National Cyber Virus Emergency Response Center and the security company investigated the cyberattack and found the involvement of Tailored Access Operations (TAO) in the case.

The cyberattack on the Chinese university was conducted under the shotXXXX code, involving four other NSA departments goal-oriented to telecommunications and about 50 servers in 17 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Poland and Ukraine.
