The main consumer of Russian gas has always been Europe, but due to the events surrounding Ukraine, the markets of that continent are shrinking, Blokhin told reporters.

Russia also supplies gas to China, something that Turkmenistan also does, and as that Asian nation is a large consumer of energy, we appreciate that there is no competition among suppliers, the diplomat said.

As China has set out to move to a more environmentally friendly energy industry and away from coal, there will be no problems or friction over gas supplies, Blokhin said.

And, he added, both countries from the post-Soviet space cooperate in the gas sector, and Russia even partially buys that fuel from Ashgabat.
