Brazil’s Electoral Justice analyzes Lula’s candidacy registration

Lula-3
Brasilia, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) set for Thursday the candidacy registration trial for former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and former governor Geraldo Alckmin for the next elections.

Such analysis will be made after the report that Minister Carlos Horbach will present to the hearing, in which the presidential aspiration of businessman José Maria Eymael, candidate for the Christian Democracy, will also be examined this Thursday.

The deadline to submit the applications ended on August 15 and, now, the court judges will assess who candidates will continue in the race for power and which should have their registration canceled.

The founder and leader of the Workers’ Party will contest a presidential election for the sixth time. Lula was defeated in 1989, 1994, and 1998, but he was elected and re-elected in 2002 and 2006.

Like the former labor leader, Eymael was a member of the 1988 Federal Constitution and a lawmaker from 1986 to 1995. This is also his sixth attempt to compete for the presidency. He was a candidate in 1998, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018, and failed in all of them.

Last week, the TSE denied the candidacy registration for Roberto Jefferson, from the Brazilian Workers’ Party, due to a conviction received in 2012 in the case of the so-called Mensalão (a variant of the phrase “monthly payment,” used to refer to a monthly allowance paid to lawmakers to vote in favor of projects of interest by the Executive Branch in 2005).

The first presidential round is scheduled for October 2, when more than 156 million Brazilians must cast their votes.
