WTO called for integrating trade into climate strategies for Africa

sede-OMC Africa
Geneva, Sep 6 (Prensa Latina) The World Trade Organization (WTO) called today to integrate trade into strategies to combat climate change in Africa, through a statement.

The director general of the WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, expressed that trade policies in the world must join in minimizing the challenges of adaptation to the climate through the expansion of financing and the incorporation of other aid destined, above all, to vulnerable economies.

The highest representative of the organization stressed that trade can be part of the solution if the policies in the sector are aligned to provide the necessary technology in the fight against climate change.

Okonjo-Iweala highlighted that the impacts of the current natural scenarios affect agriculture on the African continent, and stressed that their incidence could reduce the growth of crop productivity by up to a third, which would mean annual losses of the Gross Domestic Product of 3.8 percent by 2060.

The director of the WTO pointed out that the organization is willing to work with its partners in order to facilitate the confrontation with the current climate scenario.
