Diseases rise in Pakistan due to floods

Islamabad, Sep 4 (Prensa Latina) Floods resulting from heavy rains in Pakistan are causing an increase in serious acute respiratory diseases, skin infections, diarrhea and malaria, among others, the General Directorate of Sanitary Services said.

Nearly 595,000 patients received treatment at the health department’s mobile and fixed camps between July 1st and September 2nd, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.

Among them, there are 135 thousand cases of diarrhea; 125 thousand with skin diseases; 119 thousand with respiratory problems; 45 thousand of malaria; 548 dog bites, 101 snake bites and other conditions.

At least 279 patients died in the camps, most of them from serious injuries sustained from collapsing walls and ceilings, while others were electrocuted.

Skin diseases are the most frequent among children affected by floods, as the little ones wade through the muddy water and often drink it, which causes gastrointestinal and skin diseases.

According to the health department, 966 government health facilities were partially damaged, while 125 were completely destroyed by the floods.
