Egypt’s destroyed millions of World War II landmines

Minas
Cairo, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) The Egyptian Armed Forces have destroyed in recent years 25 million landmines and unexploded ordnances in the Western Desert that date back to the World War II (1939-1945), the Army reported on Thursday.

Quoted by Al Ahram, military spokesman Gharib Abdel-Hafez highlighted the implementation of several projects to clear the national territory of those weapons.

The de-mining operation includes the El-Alamein area, to carry out agricultural and urbanization plans, and major works, including the country’s first nuclear power plant to generate electricity in the Sabaa area, and oil exploration, Abdel-Hafez said.

Two major battles took place in the El-Alamein region between Nazi German troops and British troops, backed by their dominions.

The second of these, which took place in late 1942, was essential to defeat the fascist troops in North Africa.
