“Unfortunately, despite reports from various independent non-governmental organizations on these heinous war crimes to seek justice and bring the perpetrators to justice, the investigations were never carried out due to crude blackmail from Washington,” the diplomat said, as quoted by RIA Novosti.
Nebenzia stressed at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, held on Monday, that the ‘night raids and extrajudicial executions of civilians, including women and children’ are among the heinous actions of Pentagon troops in the country.
He also denounced that ‘the Americans entered Afghanistan with a specific mission: to fight terrorism’, but ‘in reality, their arrival did nothing more than reinforce the country’s status as a focus of terrorism and a center of drug production and distribution.’
The Russian representative added moreover that the Islamic State extremist group emerged and firmly established its influence on Afghan soil.
In his words, all the calls made by Moscow to highlight the growing threat of such a terrorist organization in Afghanistan “were met with a fierce desire on the part of Western partners to downplay the issue or sweep it under the rug outright.”
In this context, Nebenzia attacked his US counterpart, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, for suggesting that China and Russia should “contribute” to solving the problems in Afghanistan: “We are called to contribute to the reconstruction of a country whose economy was practically destroyed by 20 years of occupation by the United States and NATO. So instead of admitting its mistakes and trying to correct them, Washington is now blaming us for not wanting to pay other people’s bills.’
