At around 10:00, local time, the urn with his mortal remains arrived at the site of the ceremony, at the base of the Dr. António Agostinho Neto Memorial, which commemorates the everlasting recognition to the first president and founding father of this African nation.
The funeral procession left Dos Santos’ family residence in the Luanda neighborhood of Miramar and traveled through several main streets of the city with military honors up to the Republic Square, where the burial will take place on Sunday.
According to Minister Mercy Lopes, high-level delegations from Portugal, Tanzania, Cuba, the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, Sao Tome and Principe, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Algeria, Timor-Leste, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Congo, Zambiaand and Namibia will attend this Sunday’s funeral.
Dos Santos died at the age of 79 at a hospital in Barcelona, Spain, on July 8 and his mortal remains arrived in Luanda on August 20.
