Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the State Council office for Taiwan affairs, reaffirmed the country’s opposition to any kind of official or non-official contact with Taipei and considered the congresswoman’s trip as a violation of the fundamentals of Beijing-Washington bilateral relations.
In response to a media query, the spokesperson said that the U.S. lawmaker’s visit to China’s Taiwan region seriously violates the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, and goes against the U.S. commitment of maintaining only non-official ties with the Taiwan region.
Apart from Ma’s statement, the Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army deployed its troops and weaponry to air and sea space close to Taiwan.
Blackburn was in Taiwan from Thursday to Saturday, meeting with leader Tsai Ing-wen and other local authorities.
These US visits have kept the Taiwan Strait under pressure and China responded to Pelosi’s visit with a combination of military, diplomatic, political and commercial measures.
The China Daily newspaper stressed that for Taiwan such US trips would lead to a tightening of the military blockade and economic sanctions, while U.S. lawmakers would be facing up sanctions and restrictions on business with China.
Xiaoguang warned that the consequences would impact on the entire world, because whether a conflict broke out, inflation would soar even higher, food prices would surge and the energy crisis would worsen.
