Mexico to discuss complex trade issues during visit of Antony Blinken

México-visita-Antony-Blinken
Mexico City, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) Mexico will address very complex trade issues during the upcoming visit by US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, next month, sources from the Mexican Foreign Ministry revealed.

The Mexican government, however, is not interested in the differences within the framework of the Free Trade Agreement (T-MEC) leading to Mexico leaving the treaty.

The Foreign Ministry made an outline of urgent issues to be analyzed with Blinken during his visit on September 12th with the aim of reaching bilateral agreements before the possibility of convening the panels, an arbitration mechanism to solve commercial differences.

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reported during a recent business meeting that his office is working in favor of a dialogue to avoid having to resort to panels.

One of the most important differences between Mexico and United States is related to the production of electric cars, a sector in which both countries are very involved financially and technologically to the point that they operate as if it were a single entity in which what happens to one of the parties equally affects the other.

Ebrard said that the Congress in Washington approved an anti-inflationary package that originally contained a very complex provision for Mexico because it favored the production of electric vehicles in the United States, putting Mexico at a disadvantage.

Another issue to be discussed with Blinken, according to the source, is that of the rules of origin that may be disadvantageous for the Mexican automotive industry, and they expect to reach an agreement with the United States on this too.

But there are economic and also geopolitical differences, new or more serious than expected, due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, or the tensions between China and the United States, which must be taken into account, Ebrard said without going into detail.
