During the meeting, the Cuban delegation laid stress on the significance of CTBT and its implementation in the least possible time, in order to do away with nuclear weapons and reach overall disarmament under international control.

The Cuban delegation emphasized the country’s vow to complete and effective ban of all nuclear tests: subcritical, explosive and other methods, and also condemned the increased expenditures for enhancing such tests.

Furthermore, the statement supported the closing and dismantling of all nuclear testing facilities used for such purposes, MINREX posted on its official website.

Cuba has repeatedly ratified its commitment to non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

The UN General Assembly declared August 29 the International Day against Nuclear Tests with the purpose of drawing the world’s attention to this serious issue and urging for unified action.

Since such nuclear tests started off in 1945, more than 2,000 have been tested, resulting in disastrous consequences for mankind, according to the official UN website.

However, the international instrument to prevent them, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (1996), has not yet entered into force.
