Brasilia, Aug 21 (Prensa Latina) Former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pledged he would win over incumbent ultraconservative Jair Bolsonaro en the forthcoming elections in Brazil, in which he stands out as the favorite candidate according to all public polls.

“He should not fear of me, it will be the people who will oust him from office,” the leader of the Workers Party said at a rally in the Anhangabau valley, Sao Paulo.

In his speech, he accused his opponents of utilizing the church as political floor.

He stressed that “Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defends the secular State, the State does not have to follow a particular religion and all religions need to be defended by the State, and the churches do not have to have a political party”, he insisted.

He added “the churches need to take care of the faith and spirituality of the people, and not to take care of the candidacy of false prophets or Pharisees who are deceiving the people all day long”.

Lula shared the podium of the event with the candidate for the government of Sao Paulo, Fernando Haddad; his running mate, Geraldo Alckmin; former governor Dilma Rousseff, Senator Randolfe Rodrigues, Congressman André Janones and the candidate for the Senate of Sao Paulo, Márcio França.

At the beginning of his speech, Lula made a defense of Rousseff and recalled the judicial parliamentary coup campaign that removed her from power in 2016.

He also addressed the scourge of famine in Brazil, where 33 million people have nothing to eat in one of the world’s largest food producers. “And that has no explanation,” he asserted.

Data from the Electoral Justice show that 156 million 454 thousand 11 Brazilians, most of them women, are eligible to vote in the general elections of October 2, in which president and vice president, governors, deputies, senators and regional legislators will be elected.
