The head of state’s announcement took place after concluding the Security Council meeting in northern Colombia.
“This resolution initiates a new likelihood of peace process in Colombia that, I hope and we will be vigilant with the public forces and civil authorities, will bring about a downturn of violence”, the president added in his message.
Four days after his inauguration, a government delegation traveled to Cuba to “make contacts” with the ELN leadership in order to advance towards peace negotiations.
The objective is to resume the latest talks with that guerrilla force that began in 2017 during the government of Juan Manuel Santos (2010-2018) in Quito and then were transferred to Havana.
The government of former president Ivan Duque (2018-2022), broke off negotiations after the guerrilla attack against a cadet academy, and also tried to break the protocols established for these dialogues.
The High Commissioner for Peace in Colombia, Ivan Rueda, said that the government recognizes the legitimacy of the ELN delegation to the talks in the search for peace.
The search for the construction of Total Peace starts by respecting the Agreements, he stressed in a statement issued from Havana, Cuba, where the Colombian delegation, headed by Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva, and also including Senator Ivan Cepeda, was present.
