A graduate of Philology at the University of Havana, Arrufat gained prominence for his first six works between 1957 and 1964, including classic “The Case is being investigated”, which would become a landmark, uniting for the first time on the national scene the European avant-garde heritage mixed with the vernacular.
During his early days, he published reviews, plays, narratives and poems in the Ciclón magazine and his byline appeared in other notable sections of publications such as Lunes de Revolución, while he founded and directed magazine Casa de las Américas for five years. .
His plays have been translated into Polish, English and French. They have been released in the United States, Venezuela, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Warsaw.
The also member of the Cuban Academy of Language, Arrufat has numerous awards such as the Alejo Carpentier medal, the distinction for National Culture and the Uneac Theater Award for his controversial play The Seven against Thebes (Los Siete Contra Tebas) (1968), which endorse his excellence in the field of letters.
