In Thursday´s latest report, the health institute stated that 50 new West Nile virus cases were detected from August 3 to 9, a significant rise in relation to the 94 infections previously reported since the early-June.
Out of 144 patients, 87 of them showed neuroinvasive symptoms, while other 33 just had fever. The country´s overall death toll rose to 11.
Roberto Cauda, Infectious Disease Specialist at the Catholic University of Rome, called for alarmism to be avoided, although pointing out that a close monitoring and early recognition for new infections should be kept.
