“We wholeheartedly wish that the situation returns to normal quickly and the affected population can also breathe a sigh of relief,” the association stated in a message signed by its National Coordinating Committee.

It also expresses consternation due to the scenario prevailing at the Matanzas Supertanker Base since Friday, when an electrical discharge hit one of the fuel storage tanks, unleashing explosions and a huge fire that spread to other tanks.

It is especially sad that brave and self-sacrificing firefighters are among the victims. Our admiration and thanks to all of them for their efforts on behalf of the population, the solidarity group stated.

The Swiss-Cuba Association echoed the gratitude by the Caribbean nation for the international solidarity, expressed by President Miguel Diaz-Canel, and highlighted the response of countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, Russia, Nicaragua, Argentina and Chile.
