In an act of homage to those who died on August 4th, 2020, the relatives demanded the reinstatement of the investigating judge Bitar, who stopped the investigation on last December 23rd as a result of spurious legal challenges for political reasons.
They gave a period of 90 days to issue a final report or else they will go to the United Nations (UN) to request support from the international community and achieve justice.
Should obstacles persist, the survivors will ask the UN Security Council to establish and finance a competent and independent body in charge of investigating the causes of the explosion in the Port of Beirut and determining responsibility for the tragedy.
They will also demand that the Lebanese government, the investigating judge and all other parties in Lebanon cooperate with the Commission in handing over information, documents and data on the event.
The affected sent a letter to the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, to whom they expressed the heavy psychological, social and financial losses suffered by the Lebanese after the explosion.
