Florida prosecutor suspended for refusing abortion ban

eeuu-fiscal-de-la-Florida
Washington, Aug 4 (Prensa Latina) The Governor of US state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, today suspended Hillsborough County Prosecutor Andrew Warren for refusing to apply the prohibitions on abortion and transgender surgery.

The Republican accused the Democratic attorney of “negligence of his duty” and said he demonstrated a lack of competence to carry out his responsibilities.

Warren was first elected in 2016 and has been a voice for criminal justice reform ever since.

DeSantis, who took advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to deploy an ultra-conservative agenda that catapulted him nationally, is one of the figures being targeted as a possible contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

His agenda gave the southern state a further turn to the right. For example, in March he signed a law prohibiting public school teachers from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity with students.

He also praised the decision in the Supreme Court of Justice on June 24, which abolished the sentence in the case of Roe vs. Wade who in 1973 gave the green light to the legal right to abortion.

In a statement, DeSantis promised that Florida “will work to expand the protection of life.”
