ECLAC calls for a greener, fairer transition in Latin America

eclac
Santiago de Chile, Aug 4 (Prensa Latina) The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) on Thursday urged to address the gaps preventing Latin America from making a green and fair transition.

The ECLAC Acting Executive Secretary Mario Cimoli stated Latin America is presently going through a hard time, reporting over one regional nation facing up a complex economic, social and political situation, largely due to both macroeconomic conditions and external restrictions.

During a meeting entitled ¨Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean: Towards a Greener and Fairer Transition¨, Cimoli called for a change in all parameters impacting on environmental sustainability and for a fairer transition, in order to bump up productivity, reduce informality, create quality jobs and to move on inclusion and equality, Cimoli enlightened.

It is critical to recognize and reverse the industrial and productive asymmetries with respect to other regions, a key aspect to solve productivity and informality issues, said Cimoli, while hoping this debate will be resulted in concrete policy proposals for coming 15th edition of the Latin American Economic Outlook 2022´s annual report.

Similarly, the Director of OECD Development Center Ragnheiður Elín Árnadóttir stressed this transformation is not only a pressing mission to fight climate change, but also an unprecedented chance to boost the region´s progress by using proper policies.
