Located at the Royal Palace of the General Captains Cultural Center, in Antigua, a colonial city of Sacatepequez, the Museum has just completed the second phase of assembly, after its inauguration in September 2012 of its first seven exhibition halls.
President Alejandro Giammattei, who highlighted the role of this institution in safeguarding and disseminating the nation’s cultural heritage, attended the official ceremony.
The fact that the MUNAG is located in the building that was the seat of Government of the Captaincy General of the Kingdom of Guatemala during the colonial period gives it an added touch of distinction due to its history and architecture.
It keeps 3,000-year pieces, but the visitor will reach them after a trip in time with a starting point in the contemporary period.
Since its opening six months ago, the institution has been visited by 110,000 people, according to official figures.
Antigua, Guatemala was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and is one of the most iconic tourist destinations in the land of the Quetzal.
