Scheduled to run until August 26, this is the time when the NPT member countries meet for their regular five-yearly conference to review their development.
As scheduled, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will speak at the opening session of the debate.
The NPT is a historic international treaty whose objectives are to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and achieve the goal of disarmament. Opened for signature in 1968, it entered into force in 1970 and since then, it has been the cornerstone of the global nuclear nonproliferation regime.
A total of 191 States parties have joined to the Treaty, included the five nuclear-weapon States, marking the NPT the multilateral disarmament agreement with a binding commitment and the largest number of consents.
