The recent results in some states gave a measure, in the opinion of observers, of the influence that the previous tenant of the Oval Office has within the red force, who continues to contaminate the electoral cycle with his theories of fraud.
On July 19, the far-right legislator Dan Cox, who has the support of the tycoon, won the primary for governor in Maryland, thus beating Kelly Schulz, former Secretary of Commerce and supported by the current occupant of that local position, Larry Hogan, a critic of the former president.
One quirk is that Democratic voters there outnumber Republicans almost two to one, but Red Party voters have held the job for 12 of the last 20 years, suggesting a very competitive race this time around.
The US media reported that Cox, in addition to attending and organizing the buses that transported Trump supporters to the rally on January 6, 2021, prior to the attack on the federal Capitol, also called then-Vice President Mike Pence a traitor for refusing to reverse the electoral results and certify the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in 2020.
Similarly, candidates for the former White House chief’s court are making their way in other states, and the Republican is confirming that, despite leaving Washington in disgrace after launching a campaign of lies designed to undermine defeat, that turned into an insurrection, he would have no qualms about doing it again, analysts say.
The former president returned to the city on July 26 for the first time in 18 months, days after concluding the hearings of the panel investigating the assault on the headquarters of Congress, with the addition of a possible crusade heating up the executive mansion in 2024.
However, for Aquilino Gonell, a Capitol police officer who was injured during the insurrection, Trump should never again be near the White House or in any government position.
In an article in The New York Times, he lamented that five of his fellow law enforcement officers were killed, and more than 850 agitators were arrested. “So many families were torn apart by one man’s drive for power,” he concluded.
On the other hand, the editorial pages of The Wall Street Journal and New York Post newspapers criticized the former president for refusing to intercept his supporters as they rushed on Capitol Hill.
“The Department of Justice – specified the last newspaper mentioned – is the one that will decide if this is a crime. But as a matter of principle, of character, Trump has proven himself unworthy of being the president of this country again.”
