Russia cooperates with CIS countries to deal with monkeypox

Moscow, Jul 27 (Prensa Latina) Russia delivered to the member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) the test systems to detect monkeypox, the National Office of Consumer Protection Rospotrebnadzor reported on Wednesday.

The agency explaianed in press release that the diagnostic kits were distributed to the health authorities of CIS member states Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

Rospotrebnadzor experts are organizing special workshops for their colleagues from partner countries on methods of laboratory testing for monkeypox, the release added.

Earlier the regulatory body informed about the creation of test systems for detecting cases of infection, which are now available throughout Russia, and medical institutions have methodological recommendations on the procedure for identifying persons with suspected cases of this disease.

On July 12, the Rospotrebnadzor reported that Russia confirmed the first case of the pathogen, detected in a young man who returned to the country from a trip to Europe and came to the hospital with a rash.

In this regard, the agency assured that the situation is under strict control and that “the possibility of further spread was stopped thanks to epidemiological tracing that began in time”.

On July 23, the Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom, declared that the outbreak of monkeypox was a health emergency of international concern.

Faced with the high incidence of this virus, specialists from the Russian Federal Medical-Biological Agency developed a universal vaccine to prevent smallpox, including current strains such as monkeypox.
