Consensus reached on fuel price in Panama

Panama City, Jul 27 (Prensa Latina) Social organizations and the Government of Panama reached a consensus to freeze the price of a gallon of fuel (3.78 liters) at 3.25 dollars and are moving on today to other issues under discussion in the so-called dialogue table aimed at stopping protests.

Teacher Fernando Abrego, one of the spokesmen for the demonstrators, stressed to Prensa Latina that the result of the struggle in the streets for a better Panama will be reflected in each achievement of these talks with the Government.

Regarding fuels, the general secretary of the Teachers’ Association stated that they agreed that the benefit on fuels should reach the entire national geography and all types of agricultural machinery, while at the same time excluding the cars of the Executive.

They also demanded that the Authority for Consumer Protection and Defense of Competition verify prices, subsidies and storage conditions.

The figure of US$ 3.25 per gallon had been agreed a week before in a first negotiation of the Executive with the Alianza Nacional por los Derechos del Pueblo Organizado, or National Alliance for the Rights of the People, of Veraguas, which was later rejected by this group after consulting the bases.

According to official information, the Executive will allocate some 200 million dollars in subsidies to alleviate the impact of the boom in fuel prices in the international market.
