Area occupied by dictatorship’s center probed in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Jul 22 (Prensa Latina) The Argentinean Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) continues the exploratory probes and excavations in the area occupied by the Puesto Vasco Center, where some 70 people were held during the last military dictatorship (1976-1983).

Located in Quilmes, in Buenos Aires province, the facility was part of the so-called Camps Circuit, a network made up of 29 constructions of its kind belonging to the police of that territory, where several victims of the regime were tortured and assassinated.

Based on evidence provided by the Secretariat on Human Rights and the National Memory Archive, the Federal Court 3 instructed the EAAF to carry out the necessary investigations to determine whether clandestine burials were made there.

Since early July, a team of experts has been working in that area and detected a semicircular pit of two meters in diameter, which contains debris belonging to the period under investigation.

In 2021, the Argentinean Government decided to turn the former clandestine center into a Memory Space and, for that reason, the testimonies about the possible burials there were reviewed, which led to promote the investigations.

During the dictatorship, more than 30,000 citizens were abducted, tortured and assassinated, which were considered crimes against humanity.
