The (South) Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) reported the detection of 26,999 new infections in the last few hours, including 319 imported ones.
According to official data, there was a decrease in cases compared to 40,342 cases on Sunday and 41,310 on Saturday, but they represent more than double those reported last week.
The KDCA said that 11 people recently died from complications associated with the disease.
In past reports, the KDCA warned of an increase in cases of up to 200,000 in August due to the incidence of another strain, BA.2.75, also known as “Centaur”.
The strain, recently discovered in a 60-year-old patient, spreads quicker and has a higher potential for resistance to the protection provided by vaccines or recovery from previous Covid-19 infections, according to specialists.
