Jose Encarnacion Alfaro, a member of the PRI Refoundation Platform, documented the legal and political reasons why Moreno Cardenas, his deputy Carolina Viggiano and all the members of the Executive Committee must leave their positions on ethical grounds.
Among the causes, he indicated asset control, which, according to Alfaro, was achieved by Moreno Cardenas during the time he directed the governing bodies of the PRI, a mandate that ends on August 19th of next year, but militancy demands that he steps down before the date, with Moreno responding he would not go until the end.
Alfaro insisted earlier on a resignation to force the early renewal of the leadership, which would be in charge of organizing the electoral processes in the State of Mexico and Coahuila, and letting a new Executive Committee elected in February 2023 be charged with negotiating the coalition agreement with the opposition in October of next year.
Moreno wants to maintain control of the party’s internal processes and the 2024 presidential elections, which includes the renewal of nine state governments, the Federal Congress and local congresses.
The issue lies with the fact that legal process for the 2024 elections begins on September 1st of this year, while Moreno’s term ends on August 19th, just 11 days earlier.
According to his opponents, Moreno seeks to take advantage of the game of dates to maintain his leadership because the PRI statutes indicate that there can be no election of internal leadership in the PRI in electoral processes, and contemplate an extension until the presidential elections in 2024.
