As he said at the opening session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Political Forum, the world is in serious trouble, as are the SDGs.
But we are still far from powerless and we must take many actions in order to change things, Guterres stressed, while calling for ending pointless and disastrous wars, unleashing renewable energy revolution, investing in people as well as building a new social contract.
The UNSG also called on nations to reach a Global New Deal to rebalance power and financial resources and enable all developing nations to invest in the SDGs.
There is still hope, Guterres stressed, we must unite – with ambition, determination and solidarity – to rescue SDGs before it is too late, Guterres said at the ECOSOC meeting goal-oriented to reviewing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
According to UN reports, the climate crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic and the increased number of conflicts endanger the 17 SDGs and leave the world “on the brink of a critical situation”.
The UN member States met in 2015 and made a set of promises to humanity: the 2030 Agenda was thus passed, which has 17 goals aimed at creating people´s well-being.
