Nicaragua to build surgical block for “smart” operating room

Managua, Jul 6 (Prensa Latina) A new surgical block will be built in Nicaragua to install a "smart" maternal-fetal operating room, which will strengthen the medical care provided in the country.

Once installed, the operating room will have four screens which will show the surgery from four different angles, directors of the Ministry of Health informed.

The advisor to the president for matters of the local comprehensive health care system, Carolina Davila, informed the press that surgeries will be performed inside the mother’s uterus and surgeries at the time of the birth of the babies.

“For us as a government it is a joy to have this smart maternal-fetal operating room, taking into account that we began 18 months ago and we are the first country in Central America to perform this type of surgery,” said Davila.

103.8 million córdobas (about 287,148 dollars) went into the investment, which will allow a total of 15 intrauterine surgeries to be performed at the site, in the words of Nestor Pavon, head of the maternal-fetal medicine unit at the Bertha Calderon hospital in Managua.

Pavon explained that this type of surgical intervention costs approximately 25,000 dollars, however, in Nicaragua they are performed completely free of charge.
