The fall of intense rains since the weekend has brought underwater several areas of Sydney, the capital of New South Wales and one of the largest cities in Australia, the State Emergency Service reported.
Meteorologist Ben Domensino noted that according to records, 2022 is confirmed as Sydney’s wettest season to date since 1890 and Sydney’s 11th rainiest year since 1859.
The specialized services received more than 5,300 help requests from citizens trapped by the rising waters that have caused, so far, the death of one person and considerable material damage, authorities said.
On the other hand, the Minister of Emergency Management, Murray Watt, asked the authorities of regions such as Hunter to take all necessary measures in the face of worsening weather conditions.
The army is still deployed in the most affected areas to support rescue and evacuation efforts, and assistance centers for victims remain open, local media reported.
