The new law lays out a strict licensing process to obtain a concealed-carry permit and a list of locations deemed “sensitive” — including Times Square — where firearm possession will be illegal, according to the legislative text.
This process will require applicants to get more training and submit their social media accounts for review, CNN and The New York Times reported.
According to the New York lawmakers, other areas defined as sensitive include health care facilities, places of worship and public transportation. People who carry a gun in a prohibited location could be charged with a felony under the law.
Last week, the Supreme Court struck down the state´s century-old law that placed restrictions on carrying a concealed handgun outside the home.
In addition, on Friday, New York lawmakers began the ammendment process of the state Constitution in order to consolidate the right to abortion in an extraordinary session convened in response to another recent Supreme Court ruling.
