Legal projects and protests on the agenda of Ecuadorian legislature

Quito, Jun 23 (Prensa Latina) The Parliament of Ecuador will fulfill an agenda that includes reviewing reports for the first debate of three legal bills and analysis of the current situation after 11 days of strikes.

The National Assembly’s schedule will begin with a session of the Legislative Commission of Justice, which will receive the Minister of the Interior, Patricio Carrillo.

Carrillo will offer information on the use of police equipment and vehicles to stop the mobilizations, as well as on the arbitrary detention of indigenous leader Leonidas Iza.

At mid-morning, the plenary session will hear the reports for the first debate on the Reform Law of the Organic Law on Human Mobility, the regulations on incentives for artisanal fishing and those related to modifications to the Civil Code for Animal Protection and Welfare. In the afternoon, the Comprehensive Security Commission will meet to discuss the monitoring of the actions of national government entities in the control of public order and the guarantee of peaceful social protest.

The plenary will have a space for analysis and resolution to immediately convene mobilized social actors and leaders of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (CONAIE), as well as President Guillermo Lasso and state authorities to a dialogue table at the headquarters of the Parliament, in order to remedy the current situation.

Since last June 13th, thousands of people from various social sectors have gone on a national, territorial and indefinite strike, convened by CONAIE, awaiting concrete responses from the Executive to demands against neoliberal economic measures, ordered by the national administration.

The protesters ask for guarantees for the talks, among them, ceasing the militarization of El Arbolito Park, in the capital, a space used by the peoples and nationalities for their assemblies, and the repeal of the state of emergency in force in six provinces: Pichincha, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Chimborazo, Pastaza and Imbabura.
