On his official Twitter account, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres convened to continue supporting for refugees around the world.
“Whoever they are. Wherever they come from. Whenever they are forced to flee. Everyone has the right to seek safety,” Guterres tweeted.
The UN chief also posted images of a recent visit he made to refugees from Iraq and Afghanistan who are living in New York, the city where the multilateral organization’s headquarters is located.
When he concluded his visits, Guterres called on the developed nations to make a greater effort in this regard and recalled them the fundamental role they must play in welcoming refugees and giving them the opportunity to start over in a safe environment, with better living conditions.
As the official UN news site reported, the secretary-general recalled moments of his tenure as a UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
World Refugee Day is celebrated every year on June 20 to honor the strength and courage of those people who have been forced to flee their homes to escape from armed conflicts, violence or persecutions.
