“Petrobras reports that Mr. José Mauro Coelho requested the resignation of the position today (June 20),” the company said in a statement.
He noted he named exploration and production executive director Fernando Borges as interim head “due to the vacancy in the company’s presidency.”
Such appointment, with technical profile, is provisional, until the government chooses a new president and this is approved by the Board of Directors.
Coelho was fired a month ago, but he expected to be officially removed in the next assembly of shareholders of the company, scheduled for July.
Borges will remain in office until the appointment of Caio Paes de Andrade, appointed by the federal administration.
The outgoing president of Petrobras appears as the third in commanding the oil company under the government of Bolsonaro, who assumed power in January 2019.
The company announced on April 14 that its board of directors elected Coelho as executive president for a one-year term by firing General Joaquim Silva e Luna, who was in charge for a year after being elected in April 2021 by the head of state.
The ex-military also replaced economist Roberto Castello as director on the occasion, strongly questioned by the increase in fuel prices.
After the general was dismissed, the Ministry of Mines and Energy decided to appoint economist Adriano Pires to the post on March 28, who, however, resigned on April 4 due to questions about a possible conflict of interest.
