The election of Gustavo Petro and Francia Marquez as president and vice-president of the country, respectively, marked a milestone in the history of this South American nation, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said in a message.
“The triumph (…) can be the end of that curse and the dawn for that brotherly and dignified people. Congratulations,” he wrote on his Twitter account.
The Historic Pact ticket won the election with more than 50 percent of the valid votes, a result that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro described as a reflection of the will of most of the people.
“The will of the Colombian people was heard, who came out to defend the path of democracy and peace. New times are on the horizon for this brother country,” Maduro said and also called for the beginning of a new stage in the relations between both nations.
“The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela expresses its firmest will to work in the construction of a renewed stage of comprehensive relations for the common good of the nation that we share, protected by two sovereign Republics,” a statement from the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry emphasized.
The government of Cuba, whose president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, reaffirmed the willingness to advance in the development of bilateral relations for the wellbeing of both peoples, also expressed itself along the same lines.
