According to a report from the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP), nearly 240,000 migrants tried to enter illegally the United States in May, a figure that is influenced by Title 42 set up under Donald Trump´s government (2017-2021).
In 2020, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued the provision allowing border authorities to stop migrants immediately under the pretext of preventing the Covid-19 spread.
According to CBP, deportations have contributed to the increased number of people trying to cross the border illegally.
Due to the few legal consequences for repeating such a purpose, the number of deported immigrants ramped up compared to April, most of them single adults. The family and unaccompanied children reunion also increased, though.
President Joe Biden vowed -since his political campaign- to ease requirements for the entry of migrants into the country, including the lifting of Title 42; however, this provision has kept unchanged more than a year after his inauguration.
