According to Chinese legend, in a remote place on the moon lives an old man named Yue Lao, the matchmaking god. Every night, the old man goes out to look for the soul mates on the Earth, and when he finds them, he ties them together with an invisible red thread so that they can find each other and not get lost.
This thread can even exist before birth and must not be broken in any case, although sometimes it can be very tense and sometimes a little loose.
In the vast Chinese territory there are temples dedicated to this legendary cupid. In the ancient village of Wuzhen, in the north of the eastern province of Zhejiang, there is one of the oldest and most visited, where couples or individuals come to.
Next to it, there is the leafy Tree of the Couples, with a wide trunk fattened by the years. A short distance away stands the sturdy Tree of Love – it is said that they intertwine their roots like lovers, and if they pledge their love under its shade, they will have eternal love and will march through life and death together.
Thousands of couples and individuals come there to venerate, give thanks or ask for the desired love, and leave red ribbons that link small wooden cards with their names as an offering.
