“Individuals who started off by experiencing frequent bad dreams or nightmares were twice more likely to be subsequently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease than those who did not,” the experts stressed in an article published in the eClinicalMedicine journal.
Tracking the health of 3,818 older men with typical brain functioning for 12 years, researchers found those who experienced frequent nightmares were twice as likely to develop Parkinson’s.
According to specialists, the results suggested that older adults who will one day be diagnosed with the disease are likely to start off by experiencing bad dreams or nightmares a few years before the disease shows up.
The study also showed that dreams can reveal all-important info about brain structure and function, so this could be used for neuroscientific research.
