“Endemic” racism in UK healthcare system denounced

London, Jun 9 (Prensa Latina) White nurses are twice as likely to be promoted as their black or Asian colleagues, due to the "endemic" racism that exists in the British healthcare system, according to a study published in London on Wednesday.

The research, conducted by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), noted that discrimination is even more palpable in nurses aged 35 to 44 years.

Meanwhile, 68 percent of white nurses and 64 percent of those in mixed ethnic groups at those ages said that they received promotions. The figures among Asian and black nurses were 38 percent and 35 percent, respectively, the RCN added.

The RCN called on the British Government to take actions to tackle racism in the country.

The racial discrimination experienced by the nursing staff in their jobs is very striking, RCN Diversity and Equality Coordinator Bruno Daniel noted.

The RCN, which interviewed more than 10,000 nurses for the research, called on the UK Government to take legal actions to eliminate such practices within the healthcare services, and the disparities in the staff’s recruitment, retention and promotion.
