US summit criticized by Mexican daily citing Cuban official statement

Mexico City, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) The Mexican newspaper La Jornada today described the Summit of the Americas convened by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, as anti-democratic and arbitrary, citing a statement by the Cuban government.

The newspaper echoes a statement released by the island’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in which Cuba qualifies in those terms the exclusion of countries from the IX Summit of the Americas taking place in Los Angeles, California.

According to the text published by La Jornada, the Cuban government assured there is no justification for the exclusion of the island, Venezuela and Nicaragua from the meeting. “There is not a single reason that justifies the undemocratic and arbitrary exclusion of any country in the hemisphere from that continental event”, he expresses verbatim.

He recalls that on May 25, the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, said that in no case would he attend the conclave in Los Angeles, due to the exclusion of the three countries.

Between arrogance, the fear that uncomfortable truths will be heard, and the determination to prevent the meeting from deliberating on the most urgent and complex issues of the hemisphere, the US government once again opted for exclusion as a resource to try to achieve an event without concrete contributions. , but profitable for the image of imperialism, denounces the note.

La Jornada points out that Cuba also expressed in its statement that the leadership of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador urging that all the countries of the continent be invited deserves special recognition.

After weeks of uncertainty, López Obrador said Monday that he rejected the invitation to attend the summit due to the exclusion of several countries by the United States.

The statement also criticized what it considered to be intense high-level negotiations carried out by the United States with governments in the region, to contain the intention of many to absent themselves from the event if not all were invited.

Those efforts included immoral pressure, blackmail, threats and dirty tricks. They are habitual practices of imperialism that reflect its traditional contempt for our countries. They deserve the strongest rejection, the diary quote concludes.
