Mikati, a 67-year-old politician from the northern city of Tripoli, could hold the post for the fifth time and thus give continuity to the last months’ mandate after his appointment in July 2021.
Al-Akhbar suggested starting consultations to form the new cabinet after the elections of the joint parliamentary committees, scheduled for Tuesday, June 7.
According to the website, the following days will witness a nomination campaign and Mikati’s candidacy results in tendencies among the main traditional forces and the blocs of new Sunni representatives who support the formation of a similar government in political distribution.
Sources from Hezbollah, or Party of God, and the Amal Movement told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that they received signals from Mikati to retain his seat leading the Council of Ministers.
President Michel Aoun called on the new Parliament to cooperate and not to obstruct the process to form a government in order to push forward the financial recovery plan.
Considered one of Lebanon’s wealthiest men, Mikati became prime minister on July 2021 after months without a cabinet following the explosion in Beirut’s port in August 2020.
