UNESCO remembers historian Eusebio Leal, a universal Cuban (+Photos)

Paris, May 30 (Prensa Latina) Unforgettable, exceptional man and universal Cuban, this is how Havana historian Eusebio Leal (1942-2020) was defined today by participants in a UNESCO tribute to his life and work.

An exhibition with documents and photos, interventions by the director general of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, and the Cuban ambassador Yahima Esquivel, and a colloquium with intellectuals and people who shared with him at various times, were part of the tribute program to Leal. .

The founding president of the Cuba Coopération France (CubaCoop) association, Roger Grevoul, presented the exhibition in the Hall of Lost Steps, where for a week facets of the architect of the restoration of the historic center of Cuba can be seen in images and texts. Torres Cuevas recalled that Leal deserved the investiture of Doctor honoris causa and professor emeritus at twenty universities, gave keynote speeches in at least 74 houses of higher learning in more than 40 nations and received high decorations from some 30 countries.

“I would like to tell you that it is not going away, it remains among us in the soul of those of us who love, create and believe,” he stated at the UNESCO forum, where they also offered testimonies about the historian of Havana, the French intellectual Paul Estrade and Jean Mendelson, former French ambassador to Cuba, among others.

At the event organized by the Cuban Permanent Mission to UNESCO and CubaCoop, the general director of the multilateral entity, Audrey Azoulay, expressed emotion for paying tribute to “an exceptional man of action, a teacher who dreamed of a utopia, who made a great work to carry it out, and a great friend of UNESCO”.

For her part, Ambassador Esquivel thanked on behalf of the island the broad participation in the activities of diplomats and representatives of various sectors of French society.
