SVR: Latin America is distancing itself from anti-Russian measures

LAtinoamérica, distanciamiento, sanciones, Rusia
Moscow, May 23 (Prensa Latina) The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said that the majority of Latin American nations refuse to join the US sanctions against Russia and to question Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

“According to information received by the intelligence (service), most Latin American countries showed their lack of interest in unconditionally complying with the demands of Joe Biden’s government to condemn Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine and join Western sanctions,” said a SVR statement, as per the Sputnik news agency.

The US State Department recognized that Latin American presidents try to avoid this issue in bilateral contacts with Washington, prioritizing internal and regional problems.

According to the SVR, Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s office fears that new attempts to get Latin American nations to support Biden’s Ukraine policy could hinder the advancement of White House interests in the region, to wit: the joint fight against irregular migration, drug trafficking, organized crime, as well as the containment of China.

Also according to the SVR, the Summit of the Americas, scheduled for June 6th-10th in Los Angeles, USA, could be frustrated as a result of the refusal of several countries to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

“Mexico City, Buenos Aires and La Paz do not agree with Washington’s intention to focus on the Ukrainian issue and the fact that Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, important regional actors, have not been invited to this meeting due to their position in favor of Russia,” the statement said. It was also said that many Latin American leaders are willing not to travel to the event if their peers from Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua do not participate.
