Cuba prioritizes care of minors without parental protection

Havana, May 13 (Prensa Latina) Cuba prioritizes the care of minors without parental protection, and it has homes nationwide known by the population as the homes of "the children of the homeland."

As part of a daily exercise by the Cuban Parliament, a commission of lawmakers analyzed an opinion that will be sent to the presidency of the National People’s Power Assembly (Parliament), which will open its fifth extraordinary session of its 9th Legislature on Saturday.

It was in the Commission for Attention to Youth, Children and Women’s Equality Rights, one of the eight permanent parliamentary commissions.

Its vice president, Lawmaker Danhys Diaz, presented the report of the verification work done in 13 provinces and the Isla de la Juventud special municipality.

The lawmakers visited 22 homes and extolled the level of preparation and qualification of the teaching staff, the dedication of the workers and the living and study conditions of the children and adolescents who live and are educated there.

The opinion affirms that despite the material deficiencies that the country is going through, good taste, order and the culture of details prevail at those centers.

The parliamentarians also commended the coordination with institutions and territorial governments and the link with agencies, political organizations, students and community factors.

Such links contribute to organizing activities and in particular to celebrating birthdays, in particular the so-called Quinceañera (15th birthday party for girls), of great importance for the lives of the students.

The report presented by Deputy Diaz acknowledged that thanks to the preventive measures in those homes there was very little prevalence of Covid-19 cases.

The commission found progress in the selection of foster families for children in a position to enjoy that opportunity.

As part of the debate, the integrated work between the Attorney General’s Office and the Ministry of the Interior for the organization of visits to fathers and mothers confined in penitentiary centers was learned.

One of the challenges is the prioritized attention needed by young people over 18 years of age who leave those homes and do not have a house where to live.

The need for maintenance and completion of computer equipment was also pointed out.
