This is the highest level reached by selected food prices since the establishment of the monitoring system in 1990, FAO said in a statement.
The cereal price index grew 17.1 percent in March, with increases of 19.7 and 19.1 in wheat and corn, respectively, and little variation in rice, whose prices remained 10 percent down from a year ago.
For its part, vegetable oil prices rose 23.2 percent, driven by the prices of sunflower seeds, of which Ukraine is the world’s main exporter, a similar trend was followed by palm, soybean and rapeseed oil, FAO stated.
The price of sugar also increased 6.7 percent, 20 percent higher than in March 2021, accompanied by increases of 4.8 percent in meat and 2.6 percent in dairy products.
